Koninklijk Paleis

Koninklijk Paleis is one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful royal palaces and as a result is must see attraction when you are in the city.

The palace is located on the western side of the renowned Dam Square in Amsterdam and was used by the Queen for royal receptions, official gatherings and state events. Some of the most prominent events that have take place in the palace include the Silver Koninklijk PaleisCarnation, Queen’s New Year function and the annual award ceremony for the Erasmus Prize.

The best time to visit the palace is during the summer, when Koninklijk Paleis is open daily. The city also hosts a summer exhibition which showcases the building’s history. If you are visiting during the fall, you will be able to see the painting exhibition at the palace and the Royal Awards for Painting which celebrates the region’s best new artists.

Koninklijk Paleis was built during the seventeenth century and was initially intended to be a city hall and housed a large Citizen’s Hall for that reason. Today, the palace is managed and maintained by the Amsterdam Royal Palace Foundation and is visited by hundreds of tourists from all over the world on a weekly basis.

The Koninklijk Paleis was designed by the painter Jacob van Campen and is open to the public with tours being available free of charge. Other attractions nearby include the War Memorial and Nieuwe Kerk.
