Guide to the Nieuwe Zijde’ in Amsterdam

Nieuwe Zijde’ area of Amsterdam - beginners guide

Amsterdam is a fascinating place to visit, and one of the most interesting areas in the city is the Nieuwe Zijde. The city of Amsterdam is divided into two parts by the River Damrak and the Dam Plaza acts as a demarcation between these two sections – the Oude Zijde, a site of human settlement from the thirteenth century onwards, and Nieuwe Zijde.

A delightful blend of the ancient and the contemporary, visitors will find buildings dating back to the fourteenth century in friendly proximity to modern malls and clubs. The Nieuwe Zijde begins from the west of the Dam Plaza and ends at Singel. It is a busy, vibrant locality full of clubs, bars, lounges and stores.

The Albert Heijn Supermarket in the Nieuwe Zijde is a must visit. This store is famous for its wide variety of liquorice and cheese. There is a fifteenth century church, the Nieuwe Canals and waterwaysKerk, which is worth seeing as well. Visitors might also enjoy a trip to the art galleries or pleasant sidewalk cafés near Singel. Some charming eating places include the Café Esprit and the Café Hoppe on Spuistraat and the ‘T Nieuwe Café.

Another place of interest is Amsterdam’s Historisch Museum. Visitors will need plenty of time to explore this museum thoroughly, and enjoy the delights of the many shopping centers and boutiques there.
